COURSE OVERVIEW:
This six-week mindfulness series draws creative inspiration from the essential Theravada Buddhist teachings of the “Four Foundations of Mindfulness”. Each session explores a new fascinating theme through engaging presentation, creative meditative exercises, and dynamic group discussion. We move seamlessly from mindfulness of our physical bodies to our emotional experiences to the life of the mind, and finally, to the nature and patterns of our consciousness itself.

THE THEME FOR THE RETREAT: “How the Heart Moves”
In our daily lives, we are constantly reminded of the challenges and uncertainties of our times. These challenges, be they social or environmental, local or global, or very personal and psychological, tug repeatedly at our heart-strings. Each of us is deeply impacted, but each of us react and respond differently.
Some of us search for solace in outward solutions. Others draw inward into meditation and contemplation. Still others find themselves numb or distracted. Many of us do all these things! Bringing awareness to this process is the practice of Engaged Spirituality.
As we give space and attention to our inner lives, we notice a rich array of reactions to the challenges and uncertainties of our times. Some of us are most familiar with anger. Others with despair. Still others with confusion, doubt, or even numbness. Many of us feel all these things! Again, bringing awareness to this process is the practice of Engaged Spirituality.
Moving from ignoring to deeply knowing ourselves. Moving from numbing to honoring all our emotions. Moving from wallowing in unwholesome emotions/thoughts to choosing compassion and kindness. Engaged Spirituality challenges us to respond instead of react, and to allow our deepest intentions and knowings inform our action in the world.
How do our mindfulness practices help bring wisdom and compassion into our actions?
And how do our actions reinforce and reinvigorate our spiritual roots?
Fortunately, there are positive examples to draw from. The life of Martin Luther King is one. He remains a powerful example of wisdom and compassion in action. He reminds us of the dynamic synergy between the contemplative life and a life of service. He reminds us of possibility and hope. Indeed, often the most inspirational and benevolent people are those who retain a strong connection to their spiritual roots – who are sourced from these roots, whose actions emerge from these roots, who return there regularly for sustenance and strength.
In this day of mindfulness, we’ll be practicing just that, exploring the interplay between our inner lives and our outer expressions. And being curious about how to engage both aspects of our lives in deeply fulfilling and effective ways.
Join us for guided meditations, yoga, and reflections and discussion on socially-engaged spirituality.

THE ESSENCE OF INSIGHT MEDITATION
Six Week Series @ Everyday People Yoga Studio
October 1st – November 12th, 2017
Join us in a deepening exploration of Insight Meditation over six Sunday evenings, beginning October 1st. Also known as Mindfulness or Vipassana, Insight Meditation is a path and practice of wisdom, compassion, and contentment. This series will dive into the philosophy, practices, and personal experience of this profound and transformative path.
Sliding Scale $10 – $15/class, or $60 – $80 for the full series. (FIRST EVENING ATTENDANCE REQUIRED) Limited space.
Guided by mindfulness teacher Justin Michelson, and inspired by the Buddhist teaching of the Four Foundations of Mindfulness, each session takes a different theme, moving from our physical bodies to our emotional experiences to the life of the mind and the nature of consciousness. It culminates in a option day-long silent retreat on the seventh Sunday, November 12th.
